Dive into the world of marine science with our first ever Girls into Ocean Science event!
Designed for young women, those who identify as female, and non-binary students in Years 10, 11 and 6th form, this FREE event offers a unique opportunity to explore the world of ocean exploration and marine science through hands-on activities and inspiring talks from leading female scientists in Britain's Ocean City.
Activities include building and testing your own Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), learning how we map and explore the deep ocean, and more.  Lunch will be provided.
Places are limited and travel bursaries may also be available - early booking is advised.

Workshop 1: Build and Test Your Own Underwater Robot

Ever wondered how scientists explore beneath the waves? In this interactive workshop you’ll get the chance to design and build your own Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Once assembled, you’ll put your creation to the test in our pool, navigating a mini obstacle course and experiencing first-hand how engineers and marine scientists use ROVs to investigate the underwater world!
Workshop 2: Exploring the Deep Ocean

We have only mapped 20% of the global ocean and know more about the surface of Mars than we do about our seafloor! Get hands-on learning how experts map and measure seafloor features like submarine volcanoes, canyons, seamounts and landslides. In this workshop you will learn how bathymetry is collected and how to create and understand seafloor maps, revealing true hidden submerged landscapes!
Workshop 3: Marine Microfossil workshop

Come and explore how microscopic shells are used to reconstruct past environments and changes in global climate. Get hands-on experience of examining deep-sea sediments using microscopes and use these amazing microfossils to reconstruct 100,000 years of climate change in just 30 minutes!
Are you a teacher working in a school? Please share this with your students! You can also to put up in your school and help spread the word.

About the Marine Station

Dedicated to teaching and research, the Marine Station serves all our marine-based courses including civil engineering, earth sciences and marine biology.
Situated on the shores of Â鶹´«Ã½ Sound as part of our ‘Waterfront Campus’, the facility offers labs and classrooms extending out into the natural environment. It is the base for our research vessels and a centre of excellence for diving that enables you to get professional diving qualifications  and develop valuable industry-relevant skills.
