Key features

The purpose of this module is to enable practitioners who have already undertaken a theoretical course in relation to newborn/infant examination but may not have fulfilled the necessary practical aspects of the course, to complete their training and be able to submit an accreditation of prior learning (APL) claim to gain academic credits at degree or masters level.

The module consists of three taught study days, clinical practice and self-directed learning.

It will draw upon a range of learning strategies such as lectures, presentations, skills-based sessions, web-based learning, tutorials, group discussion, and classroom debate of issues in the contemporary literature and in clinical practice.

Lectures and tutorials will be delivered by �鶹��ý academic staff and by specialist clinical practitioners.

Supervised practice, with designated mentor support, will be undertaken in appropriate clinical areas. Commitment from an appropriate clinical area is required.

At the end of this module you will be able to:

apply comprehensive knowledge of the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the newborn/infant and its adaptation to extra-uterine life
demonstrate a logical and systematic reasoning in the clinical examination of the newborn/infant, communication of findings, and appropriate referral
critically analyse your role in relation to professional autonomy and accountability
appraise and evaluate the evidence base in relation to examination of the newborn/infant.

Assessment

There are two parts to the assessment for this module:
1. A reflective essay
2. A practice portfolio

APP720 course details (masters level)

At the end of this module you will be able to:

demonstrate depth of knowledge of the complexities of anatomy, physiology and pathology of the newborn/infant and its adaptation to extra-uterine life
formulate solutions in the clinical examination of the newborn/infant
evaluate the autonomous role of the newborn/infant examiner
synthesise evidence and alternative approaches related to examination of the newborn within the professional and ethical context.

Assessment

2. A practice portfolio.

“This module can be taken at either degree or masters level and is often taken as a 'stand-alone' module, although it is also an appropriate choice to gain credits as part of a master's pathway. This APL route is useful for practitioners who have some experience of newborn examination and require accreditation in line with current PHE standards. The module assessment comprises of two components, a written assignment, and a practice portfolio. The module content covers the role of the newborn examiner and detail regarding various conditions relevant to the newborn.”
