Key features
This 20 credit module, studied at degree or masters level, focuses on the principles and issues involved in delivering contraceptive services to women within the community setting. This includes comprehensive coverage of managing fertility and incorporates key competences to be gained in practice.
The module tutors will use a blended teaching approach utilising lectures, small group discussion, peer teaching, case studies, demonstrations, video, patient narrative and role play.

Course details – HEAD306 (degree)
On completion of the module you will be able to:
- apply in depth knowledge of the physiology, psychological, sociological and cultural aspects which may influence the care of this client group
- demonstrate understanding of the legal, ethical and professional framework for delivery of reproductive health services
- act autonomously in practice with minimal supervision in designated role, within agreed local guidelines
- reflect on the range of normal expressions of human sexuality and the supportive role of practitioners
- assist clients in choice of appropriate contraception and demonstrate effective teaching to enable safe, effective use
- consider and respond to the requirements of clients with specific needs
- demonstrate proficiency in knowledge of contraceptive methods, contra-indications, side effects and safe use
- understand the menopause and available treatments
- have knowledge of availability of local care provision for reproductive health
- demonstrate self-awareness and sensitivity towards sexuality and sexual behaviour, personal health beliefs and cultural aspects which may influence care of the client.

On completion of the module you will be able to:
- demonstrate a critical understanding of the physiology of reproduction to work with and advise clients at all stages of their reproductive life
- critically appraise and evaluate the legal, ethical and professional framework for delivery of reproductive and/or sexual health care
- act autonomously in practice with minimal supervision in the designated role, within agreed local guidelines
- critically reflect on the range of normal expressions of human sexuality and the supportive role of practitioners
- discuss and critically evaluate appropriate contraception and demonstrate effective teaching to enable safe, effective use with clients
- consider and respond to the requirements of clients with specific needs using an evidence-based/person-centred approach.
Assessment
The assessment for this module is in three parts:
- a written assignment
- a reflective log
- an assessment of clinical competence.
