Do you want to enhance your practice in the delivery of palliative care to children, young people and their families?
Our 20 credit module can be taken at degree or masters level and is suitable for all health and social care professionals who work in paediatric palliative care.
You will build on your existing knowledge and experience to develop a critical and reflective approach to the care of a child or young person on a palliative care pathway.
You will also explore the role of the interprofessional team alongside all aspects of paediatric palliative care.
You will study topics such as philosophy and principles of paediatric palliative care; communication; legal, ethical and professional issues; symptom management; end of life care and bereavement support.

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:
  • critically evaluate the delivery of paediatric palliative care in your area of practice with a focus on ethical dilemmas, interprofessional working and local and national policies
  • critically analyse the evidence base in relation to your area of practice with particular focus on a specific element of your choosing
  • demonstrate confidence and flexibility in recognising and managing complex symptoms encountered in your area of work.

The assessment for this module is in two parts:
  1. a poster presentation
  2. an essay.

APP739Z course details (masters level)

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:
  • demonstrate a deep and systematic understanding when critically evaluating the management of paediatric palliative care in your area of practice with a focus on ethical dilemmas, interprofessional working and local and national policies
  • critically evaluate current evidenced-based research demonstrating the ability to analyse and synthesise complex, incomplete or contradictory evidence in relation to your area of practice with particular focus on a specific element of your choosing
  • demonstrate confidence and flexibility in recognising and managing complex issues encountered in your area of work
  • demonstrate confidence, initiative and collaboration in managing the implementation of treatment plans for children and young people requiring the management of distressing symptoms or end of life care.
