This module will enable Health Care Professionals to develop a higher level of knowledge and skills in anaesthesia to become an autonomous anaesthetic practitioner. The practitioner will develop competence using a critical and reflective approach in anaesthetic clinical practice and the exploration and appraisal of the contemporary evidence base.

Module aims

To respond to the needs of the anaesthetised patient by providing continual professional development tailored to staff whose role is pivotal to the delivery of anaesthetic services. To challenge and develop an awareness of relevant national and international anaesthetic guidance / policy. To provide a person centred approach which enables creative solutions to individual care and to prepare the student to work autonomously and to meet the specialist elements of their role.

Module content

  • Principles of anaesthetic care practice: preparation for anaesthetic care and delivery.
  • Physiological parameters and airway management.
  • Anaesthetic drugs, pharmacology and Intravenous fluid management.
  • Clinical emergencies and clinical complications in anaesthesia.
  • Homeostasis of respiration.
  • Paediatric anaesthesia, Obstetric anaesthesia and shared airway and emergency airway anaesthesia.
  • Regional and local anaesthesia.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the learner will be expected to be able to:
  • Critically analyse, evaluate and apply contemporary evidence to support enhanced professional practice in anaesthetic care.
  • Systematically deliver and evaluate the specialist care required to care for the anaesthetised patient, consistently demonstrating enhanced clinical competence.
  • Apply and develop key team and networking skills to enhance care delivery within the anaesthetic environment.
