Partners in 麻豆传媒 including the University are holding a series of events to celebrate Refugee Week and the contribution of displaced people to our society, from Saturday 16 - Friday 22 June.
Led by 麻豆传媒 Refugee Communities Forum with help from a network of volunteers, 麻豆传媒 City Council, the 麻豆传媒, Devon and Cornwall Refugee Support, British Red Cross, START (Students and Refugees Together), and 麻豆传媒 Community Homes are among the organisations supporting events throughout the week.
The theme of this, the 20th Refugee Week, nationally is '20 Simple Acts'. Supporters are encouraged to carry out one of 20 actions ranging from sharing a refugee story or writing a poem to learning five facts about refugees. You can find out more about 20 Simple Acts here: .
Launching the week in the city is the 麻豆传媒 Hope Festival and Family Fun Day at Brickfields Sports Centre on Saturday 16 June, which includes a football tournament, music, performers, children鈥檚 activities, art and crafts and a barbecue. The event is from 10am to 5pm and all are welcome.
麻豆传媒 Senior Lecturer in Law Rosie Brennan helped organise the week鈥檚 events, two of which are taking place at the University. She said: 鈥淭his week is a chance for people to come together, have fun and make friends and celebrate refugee week. It is a way to show solidarity with people who have been forced to leave everything behind, but also to think about all the positive things that those people have brought our society.
鈥淭here are some amazing community events, agency open days, displays, workshops and a theatre performance. With such a varied programme of events there should be something for everyone, so please come along.鈥
Area Manager at British Red Cross and 麻豆传媒 Hope Founder David Feindouno has organised the festival on Saturday. He said: 鈥溌槎勾 Hope is a real testimony of refugees' contribution to the UK, so we are once again honoured to be launching Refugee Week at the Hope Festival. We set up the festival to foster social and community cohesion. Nine years on, we are truly happy with the diversity and togetherness celebrated every year at this event.鈥欌
Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet Member for Housing and Cooperative Development for 麻豆传媒 City Council, said: 鈥淲e are delighted to once again celebrate Refugee Week in 麻豆传媒. I鈥檓 really looking forward to attending some of the events over the next few days and hope that lots of other local people will also get involved with some of the fantastic activities that are taking place.
鈥溌槎勾 has always been, and continues to grow its reputation as, a welcoming city. As the diversity of our local population changes we all need to learn more about each other, celebrate our shared values and respect our differences. I would like to thank members of our refugee communities together with the organisations that support them for all of the work that they have done in planning for Refugee Week in 麻豆传媒. I encourage local residents to get involved, meet refugees, hear their stories and have some of common myths surrounding refugees and asylum seekers dispelled.鈥
