Theatre Royal Âé¶¹´«Ã½ was the setting for 15 Graduation ceremonies over five days from Monday October 20, 2025.
The week of celebration saw 3,613 Graduands recognised for their academic achievements.
They join an
alumni community
that is almost 200,000-strong, spread all over the world. And they were joined by 12,378 guests, including over 400 children.
And the most emotional moment of the week was the posthumous award of a Doctor of Philosophy – the University’s highest accolade – to the late Claire Chick.
Honorary Doctorates
The University also awarded Honorary Doctorates of Science to five people:
- Professor Marie Edmonds FRS is an Earth Scientist who works across the fields of volcanology, igneous petrology, tectonics, atmospheric science and economic geology. She holds a Chair in Volcanology and Petrology, and is Head of the Department of Earth Sciences, at the University of Cambridge. She is also the Ron Oxburgh Fellow in Earth Sciences, and Vice President, of Queens’ College, Cambridge. Marie was born in Devon and spent her formative years in Âé¶¹´«Ã½, attending Âé¶¹´«Ã½ High School for Girls.
- Alastair Revell MBA is a distinguished IT professional, businessman and ardent advocate of chartered professionalism. A strategic leader working at a national level in governance and advisory roles, he has been influencing public policy and the development of professional standards in IT, digital and computing for well over a decade. Having been born in Exeter, into a family with strong links to Âé¶¹´«Ã½ and the surrounding county, he has also been a constant supporter of computer science at this University for many years.
- Professor Emily Spearman CEng FEI FWES is an award-winning leader in the international world of renewable energy. A Chartered Engineer, she has almost 25 years’ experience across the energy, environmental, and engineering sectors, and has made significant contributions to the energy transition and the development of low-carbon energy systems. Her vital work intersects with Âé¶¹´«Ã½ through the Advisory Board of the Supergen Offshore Renewable Energy Hub, which is led by the University.
- Paul Barnard MBE BA (Hons), MPA, CIHM, MRTPI, FAcSS is a chartered member of the Royal Town Planning Institute and has over 35 years’ experience working in Local Government. Paul is currently the Service Director for Strategic Planning and Infrastructure at Âé¶¹´«Ã½ City Council and has delivered a number of housing, regeneration, and planning initiatives.
- Professor Dame Judith Petts DBE, FAcSS, FRGS, FRSA. Dame Judith’s exceptional career has spanned five decades and her contributions to higher education, environmental leadership, and public policy have been truly transformative. Her most recent role was as Vice-Chancellor of this University from 2016 to 2024. Under her stewardship, the University was twice ranked among the top five institutions worldwide for its marine research and teaching, and was shortlisted for the University of the Year prize in the Times Higher Education Awards.
